First time at a Labour conference. Interesting time for it… #LondonLab14 (@ Hammersmith Town Hall in Hammersmith) 4sq.com/1ywBR5C
Hope Back Heathrow's stand here at #LondonLab14 doesn't fool anyone into thinking there's an airport capacity crisis: politics.co.uk/comment-analys…
Local Cllr Steve Cowan, who turned flagship Tory council Hammersmith+F'ham Labour in May, welcomes us to #LondonLab14
Steve explains how H&F council was loved by countless senior Tories but hated by enough locals that Lab could work to oust them #LondonLab14
Rather inspiring tale from H&F based on clearly attacking Tory policies & changing them rapidly once in. More nationally please #LondonLab14
Speaking now is Harriet Harman, deputy leader of the party #LondonLab14
Harriet says the media/Tory agenda was about economic recovery (for few) but Ed M successfully changed that to 'cost of living' #LondonLab14
A lot of talk from Harriet about the Tories' NHS cuts/reorg - says Tories always run it down, make it worse, then criticise it. #LondonLab14
Harriet attacks "lie" at the heart of the Bedroom Tax : "they said it was a progressive measure to cut housing waiting lists" #LondonLab14
Harriet wants to see LibDems held to account for Bedroom Tax too: wouldn't've happened without votes of Featherstone/Hughes etc #LondonLab14
Harriet says to tackle UKIP we have to forcefully tell people "you can't solve problems by setting people against each other" #LondonLab14
@HarrietHarman at #LondonLab14, the tories attack on human rights & its enforcement infrastructure is an equality & diversity issue.
Harriet says environment policy's vital so Lab must speak strongly on it, which may also help keep votes from moving to Greens… #LondonLab14
…Surely goes for many policy areas actually, and isn't rocket science. Shut Sadiq's counterproductive unit & make good policy? #LondonLab14
Harriet's now giving merit awards to various party achievers from around Ldn. Applause for great work I won't bore Twitter with #LondonLab14
(OK, I *will* bore you with Lewisham Labour getting recognised for work on Save Lewisham Hospital actually, that's nice :) ) #LondonLab14
Next speaker at #LondonLab14 is Sadiq Khan, shadow minister for London (and likely contender for Mayoral candidacy)
Sadiq describes Labour's London council successes from May, including many changing to Labour control & several LibDem wipeouts #LondonLab14
Both Sadiq+Harriet have been talking up the diversity of Lab's candidates - vastly more diverse than any other party apparently #LondonLab14
"We will repeal the Health and Social Care Act," says Sadiq, prompting a "Hooray!" shout from someone in the audience #LondonLab14
Sadiq: "We can't stop until 10pm on 7 May; then all that night the words we want to hear are 'Labour gain'" #LondonLab14
Break time! All about councils+MPs so far today, as far as I recall - no other big London decisions coming up soon, anyone?! #LondonLab14
Just been to vote in a barely-explained election; now listening to debate about motions I haven't seen. Not ideal! #uninitiated #LondonLab14
Now #LondonLab14 debates #NHS & #costoflivingcrisis we're in favour of one & against the other
Basically, this session so far's a chance for delegates to speak about how much they love the NHS and hate Tory treatment of it #LondonLab14
And in the end, the NHS motion (I've just found) is agreed! Good luck reading it all in this screenshot… #LondonLab14
The other motion now being discussed is a union-backed one about cost of living. #LondonLab14
Proposer of the motion says all London Labour councils now pay the London Living Wage she says Ken Livingstone introduced #LondonLab14
This is the motion now being discussed; slightly shorter so may make a more legible screenshot this time #LondonLab14
Living wage is a key topic of discussion here. Particularly important in London with its "astronomical" cost of living #LondonLab14
Speaker from Hendon alerts us to potentially imminent move by Barnet to raise council housing rents to 80% of market rates! #LondonLab14
Considering how close Barnet came to changing hands in May, it's galling to hear they're pursuing such an agenda. #LondonLab14
Delegate calls for the building of a million council homes over the next five years, to hearty applause. #LondonLab14
"I don't think anyone's mentioned Boris Johnson yet today," says a delegate, summing up what's surprised me most about #LondonLab14 so far
Cost of living motion is passed by #LondonLab14. Now it's time for lunch & fringe discussions. Why did I sit at opposite end from food?! :)
Big queue for #LondonLab14 lunch - no idea when I'll get to whichever fringe discussion I go for…
I'm at Winning With Women #LondonLab14 fringe session, with Diane Abbott, Seema Malhotra, Alison Moore & Linda Perks.
Diane says one of the great strengths of women candidates is that ppl don't want politics as usual & women don't look like that #LondonLab14
Diane's talking about diversifying the (already *relatively* diverse) party, reaching out to women who currently feel excluded. #LondonLab14
Diane would like to see an equalities audit in the Labour party as a whole, assessing who's employed as well as candidates etc. #LondonLab14
Diane highlights key London issues like health and cost of living that appeal to all voters but especially to women. #LondonLab14
Diane's clearly been giving a lot of thought to engaging and appealing to as many Londoners as possible atm. Can't think why ;) #LondonLab14
Diane: it's important for women to support each other - vital some stand for office but not all want to so support those who do #LondonLab14
Seema speaks now, first praising the Fabian Women's Network, who set this #LondonLab14 fringe event up.
Diane has to dash off, then Tessa Jowell turns up almost immediately. One out/one in policy on those 'preparing Mayoral bids'?! #LondonLab14
Seema talks about importance of women working together to make their voices heard; she can learn from+help grassroots campaigns #LondonLab14
Seema talks about difficulties for women in their 50s losing jobs atm and finding it really hard to get back into work. #LondonLab14
Seema says most people who come to her about Bedroom Tax problems are women struggling to decide about uprooting their families #LondonLab14
Alison is Labour leader in Barnet, says frustratingly they came within one seat of Labour control after a full-on campaign. #LondonLab14
Alison attributes Barnet Labour's election result to women in the party working on grassroots issues in the community and media #LondonLab14
Alison: women on doorstep can be more trusted (often let in where men may not be)+empathetic, noticing things men may've missed #LondonLab14
Alison's proud that Barnet's Lab cllr group has continued to be 50% women as it has long been. Highlights young women cllrs too #LondonLab14
Linda speaks next, saying she thinks Lab's policies are good, esp for families, but more work needed to ensure women know them #LondonLab14
Linda highlights all inner London Labour councils paying Ldn Living Wage; bottom 6 grades paid more than negotiated nationally. #LondonLab14
Linda says this is a clear example of Labour policy on the ground directly meaning people - especially women - are better off. #LondonLab14
Linda is working to get members of her union, UNISON, engaged in the General Election campaign and to encourage voter turnout #LondonLab14
Linda: ppl don't vote because they think "they're all the same", but need to stop listening to media saying that; it's not true #LondonLab14
Woman in audience asks about education: we're not hearing enough about worsening under Tories. (Bit like whack-a-mole isn't it) #LondonLab14
A Tower Hamlets cllr in the audience says she only got involved in politics thanks to the Fabian Women's Network #success #LondonLab14
Final audience contribution raises unseen disabilities that aren't widely enough known/understood and asks for more support #LondonLab14
Tessa speaks last. "We may think London's the greatest city in the world" but it's not for some groups. #LondonLab14
Tessa has barely any time to say anything but raises campaign she's backing: gu.com/p/43mcx Now, back to the main hall! #LondonLab14
#LondonLab14 pm panel Alice Perry, Claude Moraes, Val Shawcross, chair Linda Perks, Clive Efford & Stephen Alambritis
Clive talks about the threat to the NHS in London, and the recent parliamentary vote against NHS privatisation. #LondonLab14
Claude thanks members for their work delivering in May the best Labour result in a London European election: half MEPs Labour. #LondonLab14
Claude encourages members to read all the comms he+other MEPs send so no-one can say we don't know what they do in Europe! #LondonLab14
Val speaks next. In 2012 twelve Labour AMs were elected - the highest number ever on the London Assembly (set up in 2000) #LondonLab14
Val: "this city needs *active management*" to tackle housing, pollution, transport… Not getting that from Boris, obviously. #LondonLab14
Val talks through some of the campaigns the Labour AMs have worked on, including Boris's neglect of bus passengers. #LondonLab14
I fear those excellent 5 minutes from @ValShawcross will be the only recognition of London's devolved powers here at #LondonLab14 - baffling
Alice is last to speak, talking up the successes of Lab in May but rightly highlighting the "crisis of funding in local gov't" #LondonLab14
Alice joins brief list of (I think) 3 ppl today to acknowledge the existence of the office of Mayor of London, attacking Boris. #LondonLab14
Responding to a Q on TTIP, Claude says all Labour MEPs are working hard to stop this causing problems, esp with NHS #LondonLab14
Clive's recent NHS anti-privatisation bill would require a specific vote in UK parliament before TTIP could be applied to NHS #LondonLab14
Claude reiterates that Labour MEPs will not vote for TTIP to touch public services in any way and wants that info shared widely #LondonLab14
Answering a Q about outsourcing, Alice Perry calls the "One Barnet" mass outsourcing project "awful and terrifying" #LondonLab14
Alice: One Barnet cllrs see selves as executive commissioners of services—so then why need to be representative? "V dangerous!" #LondonLab14
Linda adds to this topic from the UNISON perspective, pointing out evidence suggests outsourcing costs more, doesn't save money #LondonLab14
Doubt I'll speak in this session so I'll just encourage all at #LondonLab14 to read silvertowntunnel.co.uk Lab must take evidence-based side
Wide-ranging Qs in this session, including in the latest batch condemnation of human rights in Qatar, and rail nationalisation! #LondonLab14
Val says transport poverty is a real concern, and soaring fares risk pushing more people back onto the roads. #LondonLab14
Val: "You say rail nationalisation, I say regionalisation: local democratic control", via Ken's successful Ldn Overground model #LondonLab14
Both Val and Clive call for franchises to be run publicly as each one expires. So do most of public - c'mon, @labourtransport! #LondonLab14
Alice's last words today are on devolution - "there's a lot of innovative thinking in local gov't and we know the issues best" #LondonLab14
Val's closing words call for us to assert London as a national capital in the best sense, doing our bit to heal UK's N/S divide #LondonLab14
Clive: "If I were Mayor of Ldn—I'm not standing, I'm the only one who's not—I'd put a levy on parking to fund public transport" #LondonLab14
Clive's mooted parking space levy includes free parking spaces and workplace parking spaces. Interesting idea, could be good? #LondonLab14
Wasn't surprised to see a rendition of the Red Flag would end #LondonLab14 proceedings, but didn't foresee Jerusalem coming first
Good to speak to @aliceperryuk after #LondonLab14; hope she's right & cllrs are being listened to more about perilous state of local govt £!
Finally, a few reflections on the day.
I'd call myself a bit of a London politics nerd, by which I'd always mean I follow City Hall pretty closely. That's what London politics means to me, that's the layer of politics that first got me interested in joining a party, when I saw how effective Ken Livingstone was at using the Mayoralty's powers to improve the city I love. So I was surprised and disappointed to find that the London Labour conference focussed remarkably little on the Greater London Authority, instead being primarily about next year's General Election and partly about councils. Considering it's a biennial conference, there'll be a Mayoral candidate selection and Mayor/London Assembly election between now and the next one, so it's strange that so little was said on this front all day. I can't imagine a Scottish Labour conference glossing over the Scottish Parliament, nor a Welsh Labour conference ignoring the Welsh Assembly.
People running conferences (and in fairness almost all other events!) need to remember that not everyone present will have been to a previous event and already know how it works. Taking the time to explain things will always be appreciated by someone in the room who might otherwise leave bemused and conclude it's not for them to attend again.
All that said, it was an interesting day and there were some really interesting and inspiring speakers. For me I think the best were Alice Perry, Val Shawcross (my City Hall focus coming into play there, perhaps) and Diane Abbott, who I'm increasingly inclined to think is the best of the likely options for Labour Mayoral candidate in 2016, but there's a lot more to hear from her and the others before I settle on anyone for definite. All involved in the Fabian Women's Network were also really great to listen to so I was very pleased by my choice of lunchtime fringe session.
Thanks to the conference organisers; perhaps I'll return in two years' time!
